Family notes for Daniel 'Little Dan' ADKINS and Mary 'Polly' PRATER Daniels p.18.
Notes for Daniel 'Little Dan' ADKINS Lived at Millard, Kentucky, and at times at Fords Branch, Kentucky. Was of short stature and sported a long white beard down to his belt! Very piercing blue eyes. He was a great practical joker. Martha Adkins Slone relates an incident to bear this out. 'Little Dan' had caught a large rat at the mill. He skinned it and left it with two of Martha's sisters, telling them it was a squirrel. He told the women that he had to go to Pikeville but would return early in the afternoon and they could then cook the 'squirrel', and all three of them would eat it. He stressed the point that the women were to wait until he returned, knowing full well that they would prepare the meal as soon as he was out of sight. Sure enough, when 'Little Dan' returned from Pikeville, the women had already cooked and eaten the 'squirrel'! When they were convinced that the 'squirrel' was in fact a large rat, they were both sick for days and neither of them could ever eat squirrel again. 'Little Dan' did another eccentric thing; he built his own casket [coffin] and stored it in his barn loft until it was needed and used at his death. [55]
One might question the dates, Little Dan is shown as marrying at just 10 years of age. [Webmaster]
