Hall Green

Our journey is almost at an end - around a curve, through a deep cutting, under a high bridge, and we arrive at Hall Green stop lock.

Hall Green is the junction of the Macclesfield Canal with the Trent & Mersey Canal, Hall Green Branch. Rivalry between the companies led to the construction of two stop locks (to prevent the unnecessary flow of water to the rival) together with two lock keeper's cottages. Only one lock, numbered '12½' by a superstitious BW man, is used today and there is no lock keeper any more. Notice the lattice footbridge, no. 93, - another one dating from railway ownership of the canal. The Macclesfield Canal Society have a leaflet box on the wall by the top gate. A BW Watermate key is required to open it (walkers, please ask any boater to open it for you).

There is excellent mooring space above the lock; just right for a visit to the welcoming Bleeding Wolf inn about 200m up the lane.
