Notes for Joseph BONER Surname Boner, Boney or Bouney.
Revolutionary War soldier from North Carolina. In
his pension application, Joseph Bouney stated he "was in the rear guard when Colonel
Tarleton defeated Colonel Buford. He was there wounded on the head by a sword and
fell and while lying in his gore the horsemen rode over him, trod on his right ankle
and smashed it to pieces so that he has never recovered the right use of it." This
occurred on 19 May 1780 at Waxhaws Creek, South Carolina, when Tarleton attacked
Abraham Buford's Virginia forces who were retreating to Hillsboro, North Carolina,
after the surrender of Charleston. The Americans who were not killed or wounded
tried to surrender but were cut down with swords and bayonets. This event was known
as the "Massacre of Waxhaws." [119]
Notes for Sarah MULLINS Possibly Sally Mullins, although Sally might well have been a nickname.
