Notes for Joseph BONER

Surname Boner, Boney or Bouney.
Revolutionary War soldier from North Carolina. In his pension application, Joseph Bouney stated he "was in the rear guard when Colonel Tarleton defeated Colonel Buford. He was there wounded on the head by a sword and fell and while lying in his gore the horsemen rode over him, trod on his right ankle and smashed it to pieces so that he has never recovered the right use of it." This occurred on 19 May 1780 at Waxhaws Creek, South Carolina, when Tarleton attacked Abraham Buford's Virginia forces who were retreating to Hillsboro, North Carolina, after the surrender of Charleston. The Americans who were not killed or wounded tried to surrender but were cut down with swords and bayonets. This event was known as the "Massacre of Waxhaws." [119]

Notes for Winright ADKINS

Lived on Piggs River and Bearskin Creek in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was shown on Thomas Hart's tax list there in 1810.

Thought to have moved to Kentucky in about 1820. Listed in 1823 Pike County tax list. Land grant for 50 acres at Greasy Creek in 1824. Also at Pigeon Creek in West Virginia later sold 100 acres on Greasy Creek to Benjamin Cox on 14 August 1854.
